Meet the Author: William D. Cohan

We will welcome New York Times best-selling author William D. Cohan back to the library on Monday, Aug. 25, at 7:00 p.m. He will talk about his latest book, The Price of Silence: the Duke Lacrosse Scandal, the Power of the Elite, and the Corruption of our Great Universities.
In light of new headlines this week about another possible sports scandal--this one at Notre Dame, Cohan's visit is most timely. As Cohan examines the Duke Lacrosse scandal, he probes the relationship between sports and academics in large universities. The effects of power, money and culture surrounding sports programs have a profound impact on educational institutions.

The events that transpired at Duke shed light on what is happening on campuses around the country as colleges and universities compete for academic standing and superiority in athletics. Ultimately the struggle for power involved the university administration, its board of trustees, faculty members, parents and the state justice system.

Cohan, a former senior Wall Street investment banker, is the best-selling author “Money and Power”, “House of Cards”, and “The Last Tycoons”, the winner of the 2007 FT/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award. He is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and writes an opinion column for BloombergView. He also writes for The Financial Times, Bloomberg Business Week, The Atlantic, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. He appears regularly on MSNBC, Bloomberg TV, and on CNN and the BBC-TV. He is a graduate of Duke University, Columbia University School of Journalism, and the Columbia University Graduate School of Business.

The Meet the Author series is sponsored by the Rockport Public Library, the Friends of the Rockport Public Library, and Toad Hall Bookstore. On Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 7:00 p.m. the series continues with historian J. Dennis Robinson talking about his book, “Under the Isles of Shoals.”
