Why We Love Libraries (and Why We Love Our Library Community)

|

February is National Love Your Library Month, and as the Director of the Rockport Public Library, I can’t think of a better time to pause and say something simple—but important:

Libraries are loved because they are built on people.

Libraries are places where stories live, curiosity is encouraged, and everyone belongs. They are one of the few truly public spaces left—free, open, and welcoming to all. Whether you come in every day or once a year, whether you borrow stacks of books or just enjoy a quiet place to sit, this library is yours.

What makes libraries special isn’t just what’s on the shelves (though we do love our books!). It’s the sense of connection. It’s the child discovering their favorite story for the first time. The teen finding a safe place to study or explore who they are. The adult learning something new, attending a program, joining a book group, or simply feeling less alone. The senior stopping in for conversation, community, or a familiar face.

At Rockport Public Library, community is at the heart of everything we do. We listen. We adapt. We try new things. We create programs and collections that reflect the interests, needs, and voices of the people who use this library—because this library exists for you. Your ideas, feedback, and presence shape what we offer and how we grow.

And let me say this clearly and wholeheartedly:

We love all our patrons.

No matter your age, background, identity, beliefs, or reading preferences—you are welcome here. You don’t need to be an “expert reader.” You don’t need to know how libraries work. You don’t need to justify why you’re here. If this library helps you in any way—big or small—then it is doing exactly what it’s meant to do.

Libraries are about access, learning, imagination, and care. They are about meeting people where they are and offering something that helps them move forward—whether that’s information, inspiration, or simply a sense of belonging.

So during National Love Your Library Month, thank you for being part of this community. Thank you for showing up, for sharing your stories, for trusting us, and for helping make the Rockport Public Library a place of warmth, curiosity, and connection.

We’re so glad you’re here—and we can’t wait to keep building this library together.

With gratitude,
Cindy Grove
