Started in 1970 as a way to raise awareness for a plastic-free planet, 54 years later, today we celebrate Earth Day with over 1 billion people in more than 193 countries! Take a moment to pause and consider your own carbon footprint on our globe. When you read these words: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, ask yourself: “In what ways am I adding to the sustainability of the earth?”
Consider if you are someone who makes it a point to conserve resources, who creatively repurposes items that will end up in a landfill, and who consciously purchases products made with materials that can be recycled.
As a patron of our library, you do contribute to the planet’s overall preservation, just by borrowing instead of purchasing the single-use items we already have available for you.
Today, on Earth Day, let us also celebrate public libraries! Initiated to organize information and make books accessible to those who would not otherwise have access, our public libraries help build communities, reduce waste and conserve energy, with the many free resources available to patrons.
With our Library of Things resources, the Rockport Public Library not only lends books, CDs, and DVDs, but we also have CD players to borrow, a sewing machine, a kilowatt energy reader, and a huge telescope all for FREE!
By shifting our thinking from the individual to the whole, bringing an awareness to the bigger picture (our globe), we develop our ability to think creatively and ultimately help preserve our planet for generations to come.
